The Gallery of Contemporary Art project is a portable exhibition space founded by curator Kirill Eltsov in 2023 in Novi Sad, Serbia.
The core idea of the project is to create yet another “gallery in the expanded field” (borrowing the term from a series of exhibition projects including blip blip blip), offering an alternative mode of presenting and perceiving art beyond institutional boundaries.
The Gallery of Contemporary Art (GCA) is a gallery that can quite literally be carried around. Owing to its mobility, it moves freely through the city, entering a wide range of public and semi-public spaces — from cafés and shops to museums and art venues. In doing so, GCA appropriates attention and space, temporarily reserving it for the exhibition — whether it be a street corner, a park bench, or a coffee table.
The gallery can be worn over the shoulder or placed horizontally on the floor — in which position its potential for spatial appropriation becomes especially pronounced.
Since its inception, the project has taken shape through exhibitions of various formats:
– outdoor displays in Futoški and Dunavski Parks (Novi Sad, 2023–2024),
– exhibitions in cafés (Tischler and Izlet, 2023–2024),
– participation in group shows, such as Sinteza at the Barka Cultural Center (2024),
– and a number of mobile one-work exhibitions that appear spontaneously across diverse contexts.
Each time, GCA redefines its own position — both within the art world and in public space — questioning the boundaries of art, its institutional frameworks, and its modes of presence.
The Gallery of Contemporary Art project is open to various forms of collaboration and is always interested in working with artists.
